Automated Rig Technologies Ltd. Secures Investment to Automate Workover Rigs in the Bakken Utilizing Innovative Hands-Free Mechanized Equipment to Improve Safety and Operational Efficiency

December 6, 2023

Edmonton, AB ― December 6, 2023 Automated Rig Technologies Ltd. (ARTL) Edmonton-based technology company announced an agreement with a Houston-based energy company and a Houston-based well services company, to fund and pilot ARTL’s technology designed to automate a workover rig program in the Bakken as part of a project to improve safety performance and increase operational efficiency.

The objective of this joint project is to develop a new type of workover rig: one that eliminates the need for personnel to work in the highest risk areas of a rig, on the rig floor, and up in the derrick during workover operations. The design will also improve operational efficiency by leveraging new hands-free mechanized technology and equipment that moves pipe in and out of wells automating key aspects of the workover rig process. Following engineering and final construction of equipment employing this technology, a first phase field trial is planned in North Dakota in Q2 2024.

The project is based on a strategic alliance between Automated Rig Technologies, implementing ARTL’s developing technology, a leading workover rig service provider, and the energy company, which is contributing funding for engineering design and rig modifications specific to their needs, and operational expertise facilitating field trials in the Bakken.

“Automated Rig Technologies is very pleased to collaborate with both companies to advance the industry with the Jointed Pipe Injector Technology Platform to lower the operational risks, costs, and time spent during well completions, servicing, and plug and abandonment activities in the Bakken,” said Andrew Richard, Co-Founder/President of Automated Rig Technologies.
